“Do you like scary movies?” Well yes, actually, we like them a lot thank you very much and #23 in our list is one that managed breath life into the genre whilst poking fun at it at the same time.
The horror world is not quite the same now that one of it’s most visionary directors, Wes Craven, is no longer with us. His 1996 slasher-fest SCREAM breathed new life into the teen-slasher genre by letting the claret fly in very inventive ways as it’s characters mocked the genre conventions to great effect. The script actively mocks these conventions with lines such as “I’ll be right back” proving to be virtual death warrants while the mention of sex also leads to certain doom. It very cleverly uses it’s tongue in cheek approach to the horror genre but also allows it’s characters to ignore the pitfalls they mock as they are spectacularly butchered one by one.
The movie was such a success that it spawned three sequels and a recent TV series but it will be mostly remembered for it’s witty script, cool cast and a malevolent villain who delights in gutting his victims in their back yards!
Director: Wes Craven
Most gruesome scene
It has to be the film’s opening 13 minutes that sees Drew Barrymore’s character ‘Casey’ being taunted and threatened over the phone before being butchered to death in her garden. Grim!
