Funnily enough we were just discussing the future of the STAR WARS franchise the other day, post Episode 9, and now comes news from Lucasfilm that not only is there a new trilogy in the works but a TV series as well. Excitement at SMTM! towers is at Sith Lord levels!

As part of the agreement THE LAST JEDI director Rian Johnson will take the reigns on writing and directing the first chapter of the new trilogy alongside longtime collaborator Ram Bergman and they will create a new story with new characters in a whole new galaxy. Woah. The president of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, had the following to say about the news:

“We all loved working with Rian on THE LAST JEDI. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft THE LAST JEDI from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

Meanwhile Johnson and Bergman chimed in with the following statement:

“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on THE LAST JEDI. STAR WARS is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”

As well as the new movie trilogy Disney also announced that the new STAR WARS TV series will appear on the studios’ upcoming streaming service and that they are also looking at developing new shows for HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL, MONSTERS INC. and an unnamed  project related to Marvel comics.

Rian Johnson’s STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI will blast into theatres on 15th December. MTFBWY!!
