It seems like we’ve being spoiled lately when it comes to ass-kicking action flicks with a woman as the main protagonist. Gal Gadot proved the haters wrong in last year’s critically and commercially acclaimed WONDER WOMAN, Charlize Theron tore up the screen in ATOMIC BLONDE and now Jennifer Lawrence is back seducing and destroying all in her path in the upcoming RED SPARROW.

20th Century Fox have just dropped a full trailer and new poster for the movie alongside the official synopsis. Check them out below

“Dominika Egorova is many things. A devoted daughter determined to protect her mother at all costs. A prima ballerina whose ferocity has pushed her body and mind to the absolute limit. A master of seductive and manipulative combat.

When she suffers a career-ending injury, Dominika and her mother are facing a bleak and uncertain future. That is why she finds herself manipulated into becoming the newest recruit for Sparrow School, a secret intelligence service that trains exceptional young people like her to use their bodies and minds as weapons. After enduring the perverse and sadistic training process, she emerges as the most dangerous Sparrow the program has ever produced. Dominika must now reconcile the person she was with the power she now commands, with her own life and everyone she cares about at risk, including an American CIA agent who tries to convince her he is the only person she can trust.”

Lawrence has come a long way since her debut in 2010’s WINTER’S BONE and although her acting CV has since featured a variety of roles, it will be interesting to see how she tackles the sheer physicality of her role in RED SPARROW, as well as an ice-cold Russian accent. From the look of the trailer the emphasis seems to be on how her character can keep a sense of humanity while being molded into a finely-tuned killing machine. Hopefully this means we’ll be seeing an action thriller that relies on character to drive the plot and not just violence.

HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE director Francis Lawrence is on directing duties and the movie is due to hit cinemas on 2nd March 2018.
